NEON Heating & Cooling is a heat pump company serving San Francisco and the Bay Area, offering installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance for ducted and ductless systems.
An air-source heat pump warms your home by transferring warmth from the outdoor air indoors. In cooling mode, it reverses the process to move warmth outside.
San Francisco’s mild climate makes them a practical option for many homes. They can reduce reliance on gas, but utility savings depend on your current system, energy rates, insulation, and usage.
As a heat pump contractor serving San Francisco, we size the equipment for your home’s needs. Efficiency ratings such as SEER2 and HSPF2 help compare systems, but they do not replace proper sizing.
Neon provides heat pump services for San Francisco homes, including repair, installation, replacement, and routine maintenance.
Serving the Bay Area since 2023, we handle HVAC and electrical work, including the challenges common in older SF homes.
We explain your options and provide the price before approved work begins.

Our experience with Freon HVAC has been exceptional for a full panel upgrade to 200 amps and installation of a new Mitsubishi mini-split system in an old house. We took quotes from 4 different top rated hvac providers in the San Jose area, before deciding to go with Freon. I appreciated the honesty and detailed analysis of our needs by Slava when he first showed up to do an estimate. He asked a ton of questions, checked the house for existing setup, wiring, possibilities, and discussed multiple possibilities including ducted, gas, hybrid, and heat pump only. Once we decided to go with a specific type of configuration, he gave us multiple options. Their pricing was competitive and while it took forever for PGE to get to the wiring/transformer upgrade, Freon's team worked with them patiently to meet our needs. Special thanks to Jessica for regular follow ups with PGE and us. Once PGE scheduled the wiring upgrade (after 3 months), Freon's team was prompt and did a very clean install including all internal wiring and drainage work. They ensured city inspection was scheduled promptly and addressed all city concerns for a quick approval. I have not dealt with a more professional and competent crew in this area in a very long time. Would love to do business with them again.![]()

I usually doubt perfect 5-star ratings, but Freon completely earned theirs. My AC/heater combo unit broke, and every other company told me I needed a total replacement, quoting me between $9k and $12k. Freon came out to inspect it, and later that day, they gave me a quote for just $3,000 to repair it. I signed the contract that night, and they were back to do the work just 5 days later on June 19th. The tech replaced the compressor to get it running, but didn't stop there. He thoroughly tested the system, caught a power issue, and replaced the compressor relay and expansion valve to ensure the unit wouldn't break down again. Outstanding service. I'm finally set for the summer and winter. They deserve every single star!![]()

Yes. San Francisco’s mild climate makes air-source heat pumps a practical option for many homes. Our team recommends equipment and system sizing based on your home’s layout and local climate conditions.
Repair can make sense when the system is relatively new, the issue is isolated, and the rest of the equipment is in good condition. Consider replacement if it needs frequent repairs, has a major component failure, or would be expensive to repair relative to replacement. Age alone is not a reason to replace it.
Start with a Manual J load calculation to determine the right system capacity for your home. It accounts for square footage, insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage, and local design temperatures. As part of our heat pump services in San Francisco, we also assess ductwork, electrical capacity, and equipment placement.
Yes. Heat pump installations generally require permits. Depending on the scope, these may include mechanical, electrical, and building permits. Our team handles the SF DBI permit process. Permit fees depend on your proposal.
A single-zone ductless heat pump typically takes one day. Multi-zone installations usually take one to three days, and a ducted replacement usually takes one to two days. New ductwork, substantial electrical work, and complex conversions may take longer. Permitting and inspections can also affect the overall timeline.
When comparing a heat pump vs. furnace, consider your home’s existing equipment, electrical capacity, ductwork, installation cost, utility rates, and comfort needs. Heat pumps are a practical choice for many San Francisco homes, providing year-round comfort in the city’s mild climate. A furnace may still make sense depending on your setup and goals. Home size alone does not determine which system is better.
